FM - 10 SONG PLAYLIST

FM was a progressive rock band from Toronto, ON that released their first record "Black Noise" in 1978. "Black Noise" was reissued on CD a few years ago but up until now the rest of the catalog was unavailable digitally. The band is now reissuing their 4 classic period albums on remastered CD's.

1978 - Black Noise
1978 - Direct To Disc
1979 - Surveillance
1980 - City Of Fear

These records are some of my favourite Canadian Prog Rock from the period.

Here is a 10 song playlist to throw an earball on:

1. Surface To Air (from "City Of Fear")
2. Phasors On Stun (from "Black Noise")
3. One O'Clock Tomorrow (from "Black Noise")
4. Hours (from "Black Noise")

MAX WEBSTER - 10 SONG PLAYLIST

Max Webster was one of my favourite bands when I was growing up. I still can't get enough of the records that they made between 1976-1980. If you're Canadian, you probably already know the hits and what gets played on the radio, but if you want to dig a little deeper or if you don't them at all - here's a ten song playlist for you to check out...

1. Blue River Liquor Shine (from "Universal Juveniles" 1980)
2. Charmonium (from "A Million Vacations" 1979)
3. Night Flights (from "A Million Vacations" 1979)
4. April In Toledo (from "Universal Juveniles" 1980)
5. Chalkers (from "Universal Juveniles" 1980)
6. Rain Child (from "High Class In Borrowed Shoes" 1977)
7. Astonish Me (from "Mutiny Up My Sleeve" 1978)
8. Look Out (from "A Million Vacations" 1979)
9. Words To Words (from "High Class In Borrowed Shoes" 1977)
10. Sun Voices / Moon Voices (from "A Million Vacations" 1979)

serious bad-assery...

FIVE MORE CLASSIC THRASH ALBUMS (THAT AREN'T BY THE "BIG FOUR")

This week we explore another five selections. The original post can be found HERE.

1. Sepultura - Roots Bloody Roots

Visionary and simply bludgeoning. The title track is one of those songs that make you remember where you were when you first heard it.

2. Metal Church - Metal Church

Essential. Early in the American scene, this 1984 recorded gem easily places as an all time classic.

3. Death Angel - The Ultra-Violence

The long awaited debut LP for these Bay Area originals. It sounds the way the cover looks. About the happiest a metal enthusiast can get finding a new album and wearing out the grooves.

4. Sacrifice - Forward To Termination

Possibly Toronto's finest hour of speed and aggression. Ever wondered what it would sound like to broil scorpions with a blowtorch in your throat, and do it with class? The answer lies on Forward To Termination.

5. Sabbat - History of a Time to Come

English thrashers mixed Faustian tales with the tones of ripping shred. The result can be heard on this fine record that brims with lyrical intrigue and sonic intensity.

FIVE CLASSIC THRASH METAL ALBUMS (THAT AREN'T BY THE "BIG FOUR")

Even outside of the "Big Four" (Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, Anthrax), these spots fill very quickly, but here is a start.

1. Exodus - Bonded By Blood

A classic. Original gangsters. Listen up.

2. Celtic Frost - To Mega Therion

It's tempting to select Celtic Frost's previous debut record, "Morbid Tales", or to rewind even further to this camp's earlier band, Hellhammer. But there are two things that point in the direction of "To Mega Therion". One is the highly effective orchestral inclusions, which are downright scary. The other is the way that the band's aggression and inventiveness are so aptly captured on this record.

3. Voivod - Killing Technology

Beneath Voivod's often noisy surface exists a rich biosphere of influences and innovations. The sound is uniquely Voivod.  Few bands achieve this to the degree that this band has.Voivod have made many great recordings. The third album, "Killing Technology" is chosen here.

4. Kreator - Pleasure To Kill

Classic German thrash metal. A shining example of the so called "Teutonic" scene.
Studios in Germany must have been of very high quality, considering the stream of great sounding heavy records coming out at this time. "Pleasure To Kill" stands firmly among them.

5. Testament - The Legacy

Bay Area band of the highest order with exceptional musicianship and heavy sound on this recording. Again, keeping the words short here and just listening to this one!
